Before I go over today’s ride I want to describe my great WS experience last night. I stayed in a guest house owned by Paul & Carole who live across the street on beautiful Melissa Lake. They were having some family and neighbors over for dinner that evening and said they would like me to join them- cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at 5:30 and dinner at 6:00! We had a fantastic dinner outside on the patio and the family and neighbors were so friendly and interesting. Later a nephew (also named Paul) and I had a cigar and watched a stunning sunset over the lake. What a perfectly delightful evening! I went to bed around 10:00 and slept like a baby. The next morning as I was getting ready to go across the street for breakfast, Carole called to tell me there were wild turkeys in my front yard! Carole then fixed me a hearty breakfast and I left between 08:30 and 09:00. You know, one of my primary objectives for riding my bike across the country was to meet the people living in small towns across the US. Paul & Carole, and many others I have met just restore your faith in humanity and reinforce the fact that 99% of the people in this country are very kind, generous and rational and in spite of what the media is saying, we are going to be ok!! I only had a 49 mile ride to Wadena. The first 15 miles were on curvy, hilly secondary roads which wound around many beautiful lakes. I finally intersected Hwy 10 and stopped at a gas station for a snack break around 10:30 (I stop at pretty much every place that has food). I checked radar using WiFi and saw a front that was developing and moving to the NE so I high tailed it the last 25 miles to Wadena. About 30 minutes after I arrived, it started pouring- for the second day in a row! Daily mileage: 49, trip miles: 1,855.

The secondary roads I was on today were really pretty, hilly and had very low traffic:

You mentioned the 10,000 Lakes the other day…. They are in eastern Wisconsin. Wheaton College has a camp there in the middle of the lakes…. I took classes and worked there as a counselor one summer when I was at Wheaton. It looks exactly like you are at the river, except you have lakes winding around mainland instead of islands dotting the river. You can travel from lake to lake to lake… sometimes having to potage, but they basically are all connected. Amazing and beautiful.
