We had a busy morning: breakfast, going to the UPS store to ship stuff home (Johnny D 11 lbs, Buck ~12.5 lbs- we are so excited to have smaller, lighter trailers!!), stop at a drug store for more salt tablets and then the grocery store to get lunch for three days (a jar of peanut butter, a bottle of honey and a bag of bagels). So we didn’t hit the road until almost 11:00.
It was a beautiful morning and we saw 4 different groups of deer and a gaggle of Canadian geese. Instead of taking a rest day, we decided that an easy day would be better so we only planned to go about 20 miles and climb halfway up the Whitefish Divide.
We had gone about 10 or 12 miles and turned off onto the the road over the pass when we saw a sign advertising a brewery and pizza kitchen just a couple of miles away- and right on our route and we would pass them at lunch time! So we had some really nice cold beers from HA (Homestead Ales) and split a Mediterranean Pizza from Fire Slice Pizzas. It was one of the best pizzas I’ve eaten! We were so happy and satisfied when we left but almost immediately the road started climbing and we climbed around 2,000′ in the next 10 miles or so. Once we got going we were ok but it turns out that getting going after beer and pizza is not instantaneous for us…
We are wild camping in a beautiful spot a short walk from a cold river where we filtered our water. We cooked our dinners, hung the bear bag and had a wee dram before bed- great day!
Daily totals: 22 miles & 2,000′ climbing
Montana scenery:
Ice cold beer and fantastic pizza!
Bear defense posture:
I find it frustrating to not be able to hit my lol button immediately on seeing the bear defense posture photo. Bwahahahaahhaha! Tho maybe it’s not so funny now that I think about it! Be safe guys, love the pics and story!
