Day 14: Over Huckleberry Pass and into Lincoln, MT

After a great nights sleep in the tipi and a big breakfast at the Stray Bullet, we hit the road at 08:40. It was around 50 degrees and cloudy when we started riding- perfect conditions for our 2,000′ climb over Huckleberry Pass. Shortly after we started a red fox ran across our road and we … Continue reading Day 14: Over Huckleberry Pass and into Lincoln, MT

Day 13: Ovando, MT!

We had a great mights sleep in our hotel (> 9 hours) and then a good breakfast at the chicken coop. We hit the road around 08:30 and had a beautiful ride up a small two-humped (bactrian?) mountain. The weather was partly cloudy and at least 10 degrees cooler than it has been. I think … Continue reading Day 13: Ovando, MT!

Day 12: a beautiful ride up Huckleberry Mountain

We were on the road this morning just a tad after 08:00 after a long, restful night sleep in our rustic little cabin. After a few miles of pavement, we turned off and headed east into the mountains. It was a beautiful, cool morning and the gravel road winded and rose gently but consistently up … Continue reading Day 12: a beautiful ride up Huckleberry Mountain

Day 11- a very hot ride to Swan Valley, MT

When we rode into the tourist town of Big Fork, MT last night, Johnny D rode right past art galleries and candle shops without stopping or even batting an eye. I really admire him for that. We met a dutch couple in camp last night that we have seen off and on since we left … Continue reading Day 11- a very hot ride to Swan Valley, MT

Day 10- Beautiful Flathead Lake at Big Fork, MT

We headed out around 08:20 after huckleberry pancakes at a local cafe. It was a beautiful cool morning and we made great time riding on undulating paved and gravel roads. We also saw a number of deer including a very large buck. At one snack stop we noticed clouds of butterflies in the pine trees. … Continue reading Day 10- Beautiful Flathead Lake at Big Fork, MT

Day 9- a quick ride into Whitefish, MT

We left our beautiful camp on Red Meadow Lake around 09:00 this morning with only a 30 mile ride to Whitefish, MT. It was cool, but not cold, and mostly downhill for the first 10 miles or so. Our new, lighter trailers handle so much better on the downhills on loose gravel- we fly now! … Continue reading Day 9- a quick ride into Whitefish, MT

Day 8 of the G- two passes in one day!

It was 42 degrees when we broke camp this morning- Buck had two cups of hot coffee and JD two mochas. It takes us about two hours to have breakfast, break camp and pack everything up so we hit the road around 9:00- also pretty typical for us so far. We had an immediate 1,300′ … Continue reading Day 8 of the G- two passes in one day!

Day 7 of the GD: an oasis enroute to Whitefish

We had a busy morning: breakfast, going to the UPS store to ship stuff home (Johnny D 11 lbs, Buck ~12.5 lbs- we are so excited to have smaller, lighter trailers!!), stop at a drug store for more salt tablets and then the grocery store to get lunch for three days (a jar of peanut … Continue reading Day 7 of the GD: an oasis enroute to Whitefish

Day 6 of the GDM- through the border at Roosville and into Montana!

After a very lovely evening we blasted out of camp around 9:00 and pounded up the hills we rode down to the lake the previous evening. It took us less than an hour (about 10 miles) to reach Roosville and we were whisked through customs in no time. After 10 more hilly, windy miles we … Continue reading Day 6 of the GDM- through the border at Roosville and into Montana!

Day 5 of the GDMB- our last night in Canada!

After a great nights sleep (on a bed!) in our hostel we walked into town and had bagel sandwiches and big mugs of cafe mocha with lots of whipped cream on top. A thunderstorm with hard rain passed as we finished getting ready and we finally hit the road a bit after 08:30. It was … Continue reading Day 5 of the GDMB- our last night in Canada!
